Pencilwick

Full-time teachers spend more than 9 hours a week on lesson planning and preparation, and 40% spend 10 hours or more.

Plan from the content description, not a blank page

Pick a year level and an Australian Curriculum code. Pencilwick drafts the lesson, the worksheet and its answer key, and versions for EAL/D learners and extension. You review it, change it, and decide what students see.

Free for teachers, including 30 generated resources a month.

Worksheet: solving linear equations

Year 8, 6 questions, answer key included

AC9M8A02
  1. Solve 4x + 3 = 35x = 8
  2. Solve 2(x + 5) = 18x = 4
  3. Solve 5x − 4 = 3x + 10x = 7
  4. Solve 3(x − 2) = x + 12x = 9

Word bank for the EAL/D version

solve: find the number that makes it true. expand: multiply out the brackets. both sides: to the left and right of =.

Every question in a worksheet is tagged to its content description, so it can be assigned and tracked on the heat map.

What you can make

Start from a content description, a topic or your own unit materials. Every draft is yours to edit before anything reaches a student.

  • Lesson plans

Learning intention, success criteria, a warm-up, explicit teaching, guided and independent practice, and an exit ticket, timed for your period length.

  • Unit plans

A sequence of lessons across a term, mapped to content descriptions and the achievement standard for the year.

  • Worksheets with answer keys

Questions that build in difficulty, with worked solutions. Maths answers are checked by the same engine that checks students’ work.

  • Quizzes and exit tickets

Short checks for understanding that you can print or assign, marked automatically where the answer can be checked.

  • Differentiated versions

EAL/D versions with a word bank and simpler sentences, learning support versions with scaffolds, and extension versions that go deeper.

  • Rubrics and feedback

Turn a task sheet into a rubric, and draft feedback against it. You decide every mark.

  • Report comments

Drafts built from what each student actually did, kept to your school’s character limit and style.

  • Emails to families

Clear, warm drafts you can translate into a family’s home language before you send them.

Mastery levels move with evidence: correct answers over several days, not one lucky streak.

Your class, by content description

Students join with a code. As they practise, the heat map fills in by content description, so you can see who’s ready to move on and who needs another go.

  • Group from the heat map. Select the students who haven’t started a skill and assign them a practice set in one step.
  • Choose how much help the tutor gives. For each task: hints only, full working, or off.
  • See the working. Open any cell to see the student’s attempts and the hints they used.
  • Export transcripts. Download a student’s tutor conversation for a task if you need to check how work was produced.

We don’t sell AI detection. It isn’t reliable enough to accuse a student, and we won’t pretend otherwise.

You stay in charge

The tools draft. You decide. That’s the line we hold everywhere in Pencilwick.

  • Nothing reaches students without you

Generated resources are drafts until you publish or assign them.

  • AI never sets a final grade

The marking assistant suggests feedback against your rubric. Marks are yours.

  • Student names stay out of prompts

The AI model sees year levels and the work, not names, emails or your school’s name.

  • Your class doesn’t train AI models

Students’ work and your resources aren’t used to train AI models, ours or anyone else’s.

Questions teachers ask

Is it really free for teachers?

Yes. Classes, assigning, heat maps and 30 generated resources a month are free. Teacher Pro, at $12.99 a month or $99 a year, adds unlimited resources, the marking assistant and report comment drafts. Teacher Pro may be a deductible work expense; check with your tax adviser.

Which curriculum does it use?

The Australian Curriculum v9.0, Foundation to Year 10, by content description code. NSW, Victoria and WA adapt the national curriculum, and most content lines up. We show where a state differs, and state-specific mappings are being added. How alignment works.

Do my students need to pay?

No. Students who join your class with a code can do everything you assign on the free plan. If your school buys a licence, every student gets Student Plus.

Can I get resources into Google Classroom or Teams?

You can print any resource or copy it into your own documents today. Editable export to Google Docs and Word, and posting straight to Google Classroom and Microsoft Teams, are on our roadmap.

How do students sign in?

Students join with a six-character class code. Their accounts are covered by your school’s consent process, so they don’t need a parent to approve the tutor separately. Single sign-on with Google and Microsoft school accounts is on our roadmap.
